Design Intent/Solution

The client wanted to update a 1960s walkout ranch house with contemporary Asian influences and extend the living spaces and the views. Challenged by the restricted home site, scale, and budget, the architects developed and executed the project in four phases over the course of 12 years. The finished home  reflects modern Asian aesthetics while remaining comfortable within the skin of the original structure.

Judges’ Comments

This is a very thoughtful remodel in the way it builds upon the qualities of a modern ranch while creating something original. The renovation seems to really improve upon the house’s relation to the site, and there is a deliberate resolution of exterior surfaces that gives definition to the residence and sets up a dialogue with the surrounding landscape. Overall, it’s a brilliant marriage of modern ranch and traditional and Asian elements.
